Communication Arts magazine announces 53rd Photography Competition Call for Entries
Deadline: March 16, 2012

Menlo Park, California, February 14, 2012—Communication Arts magazine, a professional journal for those involved in visual communications, announces its 53rd annual Photography Competition Call for Entries. The deadline for submissions is March 16, 2012*. Selected by a nationally representative jury of distinguished designers, art directors and photographers, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Photography Annual and on commarts.com, assuring important exposure to the largest audience of designers and art directors who commission photography. As a service to art buyers, a comprehensive index will carry contact information of the photographers represented.

Conflict Zone Exhibition A Big Success!

The opening for the Conflict Zone exhibition was very well received and attended , featuring lectures by three of the exhibited photographers and a wine and cheese reception (courtesy of the Dallas ASMP). The work itself revealed life on the battlefield, bringing home the tragedy, horror and depravity of war. The Conflict Zone project was inspired by New York Times photographer Joao Silva, who lost both legs in a landmine blast in Afghanistan. The exhibition and the Conflict Zone project is now dedicated to Chris Hondros – one of the featured photographers – who was killed in Libya in April of 2011. Celebrate with ASMP Dallas Friday, December 9th at YesGo Productions located near Bishop Arts District in Dallas. There is 4500 sq ft of studio space for food, fun and memorable shenanigans. We will have beer & wine, refreshments, an awesome DJ, as well as a photo booth from Impressionist Portraits to capture the night with new and old friends. Pixel Portfolio will be happening, too, so share your work from this year with everyone. We all want to see what you’ve been shooting – work or personal stuff. If It Sounds Fishy…

If it sounds fishy, it is probably phishy – as in a phishing scam! Phishing is similar to fishing, only it’s an electronic net cast out to hook unsuspecting prey on the internet. We’ve all seen the generic phishing scam emails before: You’ve won $1 million USD in a foreign lottery, A royal heiress needs your help transferring millions of dollars to the US and you’ll get a percentage! They are all lies, designed to part you from your hard-earned money!

The “focused phishing” scams are very similar, but they are tweaked to target a specific group of people. Many trades/industries have been targeted with their own version of the story, and photographers often receive an email similar to this:

Hello,

Am Dr Mary Corbett , Doing my search i got your contact about your photography works,actually my daughter will be having her wedding on December and i want to ask for your good service at the wedding taking pictures at the occasion, I would be so glad to have a very clean and perfect pictures from you and if possible you can copy the pictures in a CD .please see below the date and location of the occasion.

The bad news is that you haven’t gained a new client. You won’t earn another paycheck. In fact, you’ll wind up losing money to some gang in a distant land before it’s all said and done. So, be careful and hit spam when you see these fishy sounding emails pop up in your inbox.

What: ASMP Foundation Grant presents Steve Whittaker

When: November 10, 2011 – 6:30 to 9pm

Where: Art Institute of Dallas

Why: One of the main goals of Steve’s presentation is to give attendees a better understanding of why they need to pay close attention to the details of their contracts, and to give fellow photographers, especially emerging photographers, a better understanding of what the business of photography is all about. Risk management is a big issue in our profession and too many people don’t fully appreciate it’s importance. Case studies – including the lighting of a 24-story office tower – are used to help illustrate a range of issues. Project coordination, execution and wrap up are discussed as well.

Steve Whittaker is based on the San Francisco peninsula, covering local, regional and national assignments. The majority of his work is architectural, interior and aerial photography. His specialty is lighting buildings at dusk. His clients range from architects, advertising agencies, interior designers, corporate direct and hospitality.

Steve joined ASMP in 1983. In 1995, he became an active ASMP Northern California Chapter board member with a focus on outreach and education to emerging photographers. In 1999-2001, he was chapter Co-President and joined other ASMP Architectural Photographers with ASMP Architecture-an active specialty group of ASMP. In March 2010 Steve was elected to the ASMP National Board of Directors.
